Gambling in New South Wales
In New South Wales, Liquor & Gaming NSW is responsible for overseeing the gaming regulatory framework which attempts to balance the responsible development of the gaming industry (within the parameters of the regulatory controls) with community standards and the social harms of problem gambling.
The New South Wales regulatory framework includes includes wagering and gaming activities as well as lotteries and community competitions.
Liquor & Gaming NSW advise the government with regards to developing and implementing policy, are responsible for licensing, ensure compliance and monitor the revenue collected from gaming activity. They also supervise technical standards and oversee the Responsible Gambling Fund.
Wagering in New South Wales follows the regulations set out in the 1998 Betting and Racing Act. Responsible Gambling Fund
The Office of Responsible Gambling (funded by the Responsible Gambling Fund) is involved in research to aid in the formation of evidence-based policy and programs; community education; support and counselling services; as well as enforcing responsible gambling obligations and practices.
The Responsible Gambling Fund also funds a problem gambling telephone helpline open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Trained counsellors are available to discuss personal gambling problems or the problems of someone else. Referrals to other free programs and support services as well as non-English language interpretation are also provided.
